GOLF NEWS - Boys 2004

Varsity Finishes 2nd In Seaview League!

ALISO VIEJO, June 6 --- At the annual awards banquet, Coaches Wayne Westling, Mike Middlebrook and Robbie Schmitz honored the 2004 boys golf team for an outstanding season.  The team finished 2nd in the tough Seaview League and third in the CIF divisionals.

Individual awards included:

  • Sean Shahi - Kings Point Cup and Varsity Most Valuable Player (photo above)

  • Ryan Oriza - Most Improved Varsity Player

  • Shane Lyznicki - Varsity Rookie of the Year

  • Sean Shahi and Kellen Tyler - All-League First Team

  • Andrew Mahnke - All-League Second Team

  • CIF Individuals - Sean Shahi (Ryan Oriza took his place due to a conflict)

  • Varsity Scholar Athletes: Andrew Mahnke (4.07), Kevin Irwin (3.83)

  • Eric Pratt - Outstanding JV Golfer (photo on right)

El Prado CC, May 14 --- In the Southern CIF Divisional Team tournament, the Wolverines shot 371 and finished third - just one stroke behind Tesoro and another stroke behind St. Magaret's.  Unfortunately, only the top two advance in the CIF tournament. Great season Wolverines!

MAY 3-4 ---- In League Finals, Sean Shahi, Andrew Mahnke, Kevin Irwin, Ryan Oriza, and Shane Lyznicki all advanced to the second round!  Sean Shahi finished fourth overall and advanced to CIF individuals.  Ryan Oriza and Andrew Mahnke tied for seventh place - Oriza winning a two-hole playoff.  Kevin Irwin finished 10th.  Way to go, Wolverines!!

LAGUNA NIGUEL, April 29-- Ryan Oriza led the varsity to their 8th league win versus Laguna Hills, 192-211.  The Wolverines finished 2nd in the league behind Foothill HIgh School.

TUSTIN, April 28-- The varsity could not overcome the home-course advantage at Tustin Ranch, and fell to Foothill 201-185.  This gives the Wolverines two league losses - one to Woodbridge and one to Foothill, and drops them back to second place behind Foothill.  Only one league match remains - Laguna Hills Thursday; League Finals begin next week.

LAGUNA NIGUEL, April 27-- Led by Sean Shahi's 39, the varsity golf team extended its record to 7-1 in the Sea View League with a decisive 200-228 win over Irvine.  The next big match is Wednesday, April 28th, versus Foothill.

LAGUNA NIGUEL, April 20 -- Yes!  The varsity evened the season with Woodbridge, 192-202 and climbed back into a tie for first place in the Sea View League!

SANTA ANA, April 14 -- The varsity golf team defeated Newport Harbor for the second time in as many days.  Kellen Tyler and Kevin Irwin were co-medalists with one-under par 35's, and the team total of 187 defeated Newport Harbor by six strokes. The next league match is April 20th - a "grudge match" against Woodbridge - this time on home turf!

LAGUNA NIGUEL, April 13 -- ANHS stormed out of spring recess with a ten-stroke victory over Newport Harbor, 202-212, at El Niguel Country Club.  Conor Moore, Andrew Mahnke and Kevin Irwin each shot 39.

LAGUNA HILLS, April 1 -- Sean Shahi fired a 2-under-par 34 and Kellen Tyler shot 35 at Laguna Woods, to lead the varsity to a 181-187 victory over Laguna Hills High School.

LAGUNA NIGUEL, March 31 -- Shooting a very strong 193, the varsity golf team even the season against non-league Pennisula, beating them by 20 shots on the El Niguel front nine. Sean Shahi was medalist again with 35, and Ryan Oriza shot 37.  This is the third match in a row that Shahi has shot under par!

IRVINE, March 30 -- The varsity golf team dominated Irvine at Oak Creek, winning the match 181-213.  Sean Shahi was medalist with a one-under par  34, and Andrew Mahnke fired a 36.

LAGUNA NIGUEL, March 29 -- The boys varsity continued their winning ways with a convincing 192-214 win over Capo Valley High School in a non-league match at El Niguel.  The 192 score was the lowest ever ANHS at El Niguel.  Sean Shahi shot a 2-under par 34 to lead all golfers.

LAGUNA NIGUEL, March 25 -- Shooting a team-low 193, the boys varsity beat the highly-ranked Foothill golf team 193-203 for their first conference win of the year. Andrew Mahnke continued his hot play and was medalist with a 36, that included an eagle on El Niguel's par five number 6.  Ryan Oriza shot 37, Sean Shahi 38, and Kellen Tyler 39.

IRVINE, March 23 -- The varsity team had trouble with the Rancho San Joaquin golf course and lost their opening league match of the season to Woodbrige, 201-184.  Low scores for ANHS were Kellen Tyler (38), Ryan Oriza (40) and Sean Shahi (40).

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, March 16 -- Traveling to Marbella to face off against Capo Valley high school, the Varsity Golf Team played to a very unusual tie.  Normally only the low five scores for each team are counted, but in the event of a tie the sixth score counts - but that was also a tie Tuesday!  Sean Shahi was medalist with 38, and Andrew Mahnke was right behind with 39.  Due to 10th grade testing, the team played without two sophomores.

ALISO VIEJO, March 15 --  The Varsity continued their hot spring with a decisive win over Laguna Beach, 188-208.  Scores were low on the relatively short Valley course.

Andrew Mahnke was medalist with a sizzling 3-under par 33, and Kellen Tyler shot 35. Sean Shahi had an eagle enroute to a 38.

JV News

ALISO VIEJO, April 15 -- Eric Pratt led the JV to a league win over Newport Harbor, 199-205.  Eric was medalist with a one-under par 35.

COSTA MESA, April 13 -- The JV team improved their record to 6-4 with a victory over Newport Harbor.

ALISO VIEJO, March 25 -- Eric Pratt fired a season-best 35 to lead the Junior Varsity team to their best score of the year (198), but not good enough against a tough Foothill HS JV.  Jay Chang shot a very respectable 38, and Neil Anderson 39.  Shane Lyznicki leads the team in terms of stroke average.
