2005 Sea View League Champions!

Great Season, Girls!
Sweep Sea View League 10-0!

A terrific 2005 season is now history, but both the varsity and junior varsity teams can take a lot of pride in the season.  The varsity swept the Sea View League with a perfect 10-0 mark (the first time ever in school history), they set a new team 9-hole record (189), were ranked number two in the county (finished 4th) , and make it to CIF finals. With three players returning, plus a very strong JV team (that went 10-0 this season), the Wolverines should again be competing for a league title next year - the South Coast League!  That's right, Aliso Niguel leaves the Sea View League and joins Dana Point, San Clemente, Tesoro, Mission Viejo, and Capistrano Valley in the South Coast League next year.  Good luck girls!

December 13, 2005  -- Michelle Beninnghoven was named to the all-county second team by the Orange County Register (more).

RIVERSIDE, CA - November 10 -- The Wolverines faltered in CIFF SS finals, and failed to qualify for the state tournament.  Torrance, Long Beach Wilson, Cerritos and Diamond Bar advanced to the WSCGA qualifier.  The Indian Hills course in Riverside is a true "mountain goat" course, and proved too much for the Wolverines. The leading Wolverines scores were:  Sophomore Angela Lee - 85, Carrie Lee - 87, Michelle Benninghoven - 88, and sophomore Nari Sohn - 88.

CHINO, CA - November 7 -- ANHS finished 2nd in the CIF Southern Section team divisional tournament held at El Prado CC for the top 18 teams in the division. Their 407 score was second only to University HS, that shot 398. Since the top four teams advance, the Wolverines will compete with fifteen other teams for the CIFSS championship on Thursday, November 9th at Indian Hills CC in Riverside. [Complete CIF SS Results]

Carrie Lee led the attack with a par 72, followed by an 80 by Michelle Benninghoven, an 82 by Stephanie Kim and an 84 by Connie Gonzales. Lee's 72 was second best on the day, and was her personal best - going out with a blistering 3-under-par 33 (with birdies on holes 2, 4 and 6) and coming home with 39. [OCR article Nov. 8]

AWARDS - November 4 -- Michelle Benninghoven, Carrie Lee and Nari Sohn were all named to the Sea View League 1st team All-League in an award ceremony for the 2005 girls golf team.  Benninghoven was also named co-MVP of the Sea View League, sharing the honor with Janette Kim of Irvine, and was named ANHS team MVP and winner of the Kings Point Cup. Angela Lee and Connie Gonzales were named to the 2nd team all-league.

Carrie Lee earned the Coaches Award, and was recognized by Coach Wayne Westling for maintaining the highest grade point average on the team.  Carrie Lee and Stephanie Kim were honored because they lettered for four years. Carrie Lee, Stephanie Kim, Angela Lee, Nari Sohn and Nikki Stewart all earned the Scholar Athlete distinction.  Nikki Stewart was named "Rookie of the Year."

Bernice Macaya was awarded the MVP of the Junior Varsity by JV coach Donn Munsell, and Yalina Gonzales was named "JV Rookie of the Year."  [More]

League Individual Finals - WOW!

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, CA - November 1-2 -- Aliso Niguel dominated league individual finals when the six varsity players captured three of the top four slots and six of the top 12 positions!  Michelle Benninghoven finished second, shooting 83-86, and advanced to CIF.  Sophomores Nari Sohn and Angela Lee finished third and fourth, respectively.  Carrie Lee finished 7th, Connie Gonzales 8th, and Stephanie Kim finished 12th.  Complete Results.

The Wolverines have good reason to smile after they dominated League Finals!

Michelle Benninghoven ('06) studies birdie putt on the 18th green at San Juan Hills Country Club.

 Michelle advanced to CIF Individuals.

NOVEMBER 1 -- Carrie Lee was named golf "Athlete of the Week" by the Orange County Register, and the newspaper ranked the Wolverines third in the county.

ALISO VIEJO, CA - October 27 --- The Wolverines finished league play unbeaten, posting a 10-0 record!  They defeated Foothill on the Valley course 198-230.  Nari Sohn was medalist with 37, Michelle Benninghoven shot 38 and Carrie Lee shot 39 to lead the team.  This is the first time in school history that either the boys or girls have posted a 10-0 record!

ALISO VIEJO, CA - October 26 --- ANHS lost a non-league match to CdM on the Aliso Viejo Creek course, 217-213.  Low scorers for the Wolverines were Carrie Lee - 40, Angela Lee - 42, Nari Sohn - 43 and Connie Gonzales - 45.

NEWPORT BEACH, CA - October 25 --- ANHS clinched the Sea View League title by defeating Newport Harbor 219-286 on the prestigious Big Canyon County Club course.  Carrie Lee earned medalist honors with a 41.  Michelle Benninghoven shot a 42 and Connie Gonzales a 43.

SAN CLEMENTE, CA - October 24 --- San Clemente won the grudge match, and handed the Wolverines their 2nd non-league defeat of the season, 240-242.  Michelle Benninghoven tamed the Pacifica golf course with a 38, but the rest of the team struggled on a cold, damp outing.

ALISO VIEJO, CA - October 21 --- Aliso Niguel all but guaranteed themselves a Sea View League title by defeating Woodbridge for the second time, 210-225. Even if ANHS loses their last two matches against Foothill and Newport Harbor, they will still own the tie breaker against Woodbridge.  Michelle Benninghoven led all scorers with a 39 on the tricky Ridge Course at Aliso Viejo GC. Congratulations Wolverines!

LAGUNA WOODS, CA - October 18 --- Make it 7-0 is Sea View League play!  The Wolverines defeated Laguna Hills on the Laguna Woods course, 214-248.  Wet conditions produced balanced scoring, with Carrie Lee and Stephanie Kim shooting 42's, Michelle Benninghoven and Connie Gonzales contributing 43's and Nari Sohn a 44.

TUSTIN, CA - October 11 --- The Wolverines ran their league record to 6-0, defeating last-year's champion Foothill High School at Tustin Ranch, 231-261. The course played longer than normal, as the match was played from the white tees. Angela Lee was medalist with 42.  ANHS is now 11 and 1 on the season!  Next week they play San Clemente, Laguna Hills and Woodbridge.

ALISO VIEJO, CA - October 10 --- The Wolverines defeated Irvine, 201-241, on the treacherous Ridge Course at Aliso Viejo GC to extend their league record to 5-0.  Carrie Lee led all scorers with a 37, including an eagle on the par 5 6th hole.  Nari Sohn shot a 39.

ALISO VIEJO, CA - October 6 --- ANHS won their fourth straight league match by defeating Newport Harbor on the Valley Course at AVGC 189-254. The 189 total is a new school record, bettering the 194 they shot on September 15th.  Carrie Lee was medalist  with a par 36, and Connie Gonzales, Michelle Benninghoven and Angela Lee all shot one-over-par 37's.  Stephanie Kim shot 42 to round out the low five scores for Aliso.

NEWPORT BEACH, CA - October 5 --- The Wolverines continued their win streak, defeating CdM High School 209-211 at the Newport Beach Country Club in a real nail biter. Michelle Benninghoven was medalist with a 38, and Carrie Lee and Nari Sohn each shot 41's to lead ANHS.

IRVINE, CA - October 4 --- Defeating Woodbridge (Ranked 10th in the County) on the road 217-239, the Wolverines took a large step towards a league title.  Carrie Lee was again medalist with a 40, and  Michelle Benninghoven contributed a 42 and Connie Gonzales 45. Newport Harbor, the other league contender, is playing without their number one player, Natlie Draganza, who is injured, and that can only help ANHS's chances this season.  GO WOLVERINES!

ALISO VIEJO, CA - September 29 --- The Wolverines made it two in a row in Sea View League play by defeating Laguna Hills 196-249 on the Ridge course at Aliso Viejo Golf Club.  Carrie Lee was medalist with a one-over-par 36 and Michelle Benninghoven shot 37.  Nikki Stewart, Connie Gonzales, and Angela Lee shot 40, 41 and 42, respectively.

ALISO VIEJO, CA - September 22 --- The Wolverines defeated San Clemente on the Valley Course at AVGC, 198-208. Previously, San Clemente was ranked number one in the Country!  Angela Lee and Michelle Benninghoven shared medalist honors with 37's and Carrie Lee shot a 39 to lead the team.

DOVE CANYON, CA - September 20 --- Michelle Benninghoven led the Wolverines to their third straight win.  Benninghoven shot 41 and the team defeated Trabuco Hills 223-272.

ALISO VIEJO, CA -September 15 --- Carrie Lee led all scorers with a personal competition-best 35 (one-under par) and ANHS set a school record by shooting 194 on the Valley Course at Aliso Viejo Golf Club, easily defeating Trabuco Hills, 194-252.  Lee had two bogies to blemish her round, but birdied 3 of the last 4 holes - including the par 5 ninth where she reached the green in two.  Michelle Benninghoven and Nari Sohn each fired one-over 37's, and Angela Lee shot 38.  Benninghoven started her day by chipping in from the back fringe on the first green for a birdie.  ANHS won the match, 194-252.

ALISO VIEJO, CA - September 8 --- Seniors Michelle Benninghoven and Carrie Lee fired a pair of 38's on the treacherous Creek Course at Aliso Viejo Golf Club to capture co-medalist honors and lead the Wolverines to a decisive 205-247 victory over Laguna Beach. Sophomore Nikki Stewart, in her first varsity match, shot a very respectable 41. One year ago, ANHS also opened the season on the Creek course and shot 231, which reveals dramatic year-to-year team improvement (26 strokes). Keep it up, girls!!

September 6th - Coach Wayne Westling announced the rosters and schedule for the 2005 girl's season. The varsity has six returning players and is expected to challenge for the Sea View League title. The lady Wolverines open Sea View League play on September 28th versus Irvine at Oak Creek. In high school golf, the team score is determined by adding the lowest five scores of a six-person team. A seventh player is used only in the event a player is delayed or falls ill before the match begins (more).
